In April 2005, a Stradivarius violin named The Lady Tenant sold for $2.03 million at an auction. The instrument was made by master crafter Antonio Stradivari in 1699. The next year, May 2006, a 1708 Stradivarius fetched $3.45 million. The violin was called The Hammer and it was the most expensive violin on record — before Russian businessman Maxim Viktorov reportedly paid $7 million for an 18th century violin.
